This city got drawn on paper before most of it existed.

Most towns grow and then somebody names them. Temecula worked the other way around. The valley was mostly ranchland when a development company laid out a master plan called Rancho California, and the street layout and land use pattern of the city you drive through today came largely out of that plan.

The story people tell around here is that when it came time to vote, the developers wanted to name the place Rancho California and the residents weren't having it. Whether that's exactly how it went or a version that improved with retelling, the name stuck. Temecula comes from the Luiseño word Temecunga, temet for sun and ngna for place of, which the Spanish wrote down as Temecula and translated as where the sun breaks through the mist. Around here people are proud of that name and will tell you it's the only one of its kind left in California. The mist really does burn off most mornings.

The city incorporated on December 1, 1989. It's past a hundred and ten thousand people now.

There's one more thing about this valley worth knowing, and it explains something people notice without being able to name it. Rancho California Water District says the valley floor sits between nine hundred and twelve hundred feet above sea level, and that it pumps water as high as twenty eight hundred and fifty feet to reach some of its pressure zones. That's most of two thousand feet of elevation inside one water district. Which is why pressure in Temecula is not one number. It depends on which zone your house sits in, and it's why a regulator does more work here than it would in a flat town. It's also the first thing a pressure reading answers, which takes minutes.

That's what's actually under the houses. A valley that filled in fast, mostly recently, with whole neighborhoods sharing a construction year and the same materials. Houses built together tend to hit the same problems around the same time, and the Valley's hard water isn't helping any of them. Knowing where your house sits on that curve beats being surprised by it, and a camera down the line tells you in one visit.
